About the Artist

Billy Sherry is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he studied sculpture under Leonard Cave. His early work in carved wood was soon replaced with large steel abstract pieces after he met and worked with the French sculptor Marc Berlet in Miami. His work is abstract, using the natural geometry of steel in formal and often lyrical statements. His sculpture is grounded in the tradition of Gonzalez, Smith and Caro, yet it expresses a clear and individual style. Billy Sherry is a founding member of The (x) Gallery, a cooperative of contemporary art on Nantucket. His work is shown with The Provincetown Group Gallery, East East Gallery, The Art Cabinet in Nantucket, and ARC Fine Art in Fairfield, CT. Sherry says of his work, "I work in an abstract expressionist mode, building the sculpture usually with no preconceived plan. I like the angular expression of steel. The constructive process affords me freedom to experiment in many directions. I strive for clarity and succinctness in my work. I consider my work to be the result of staying attentive to the creative process. I know that the hard work of putting pieces of steel together into sculptures is dependent upon my belief that perseverance is the key. I understand that sculptures with which I am pleased will emerge from the long and arduous process if I am determined, attentive, and have the courage to persevere through the doubts and frustrations within the creative process. I believe that "less is more" and I strive to make clean, clear, and succinct statements in steel, wood, and stone.”
